Change the master role in a Juniper Virtual Chassis

How to move the master role of a Juniper Virtual Chassis back to member 0 with a single command, and what to expect while it switches.

A Juniper Virtual Chassis (VC) lets several Juniper switches operate as a single logical device, with one member acting as master. Sometimes the master role ends up on member 1 instead of member 0. In a two-member VC this is mostly cosmetic, but most people would still rather have it on member 0. Moving it back takes one command.

Switch the master

{master:1}
admin@SWITCH> request chassis routing-engine master switch
warning: Traffic will be interrupted while the PFE is re-initialized
Toggle mastership between routing engines ? [yes,no] (no) yes

Traffic is briefly interrupted while the PFE re-initialises. To avoid having to reconnect your SSH session, run the command from the backup member; you will see the prompt change from master:1 to master:0.

Verify the result

The prompt shows that member 0 is now the master:

{master:0}
admin@SWITCH>
