Customise the Microsoft Teams Rooms background

Set your own background image and colour on a Microsoft Teams Rooms device with a SkypeSettings.xml file, and the image size it expects for one or two screens.

Contents

A Microsoft Teams Rooms device running Windows 10 IoT can show your company’s own background image and colour. The settings live in a single XML file.

Create SkypeSettings.xml

Create a file named SkypeSettings.xml in this folder:

C:\Users\Skype\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.SkypeRoomSystem_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState

If you cannot browse to that path directly, go to C:\Users\ and open the Skype folder by hand. You may have to grant yourself access to it first.

Add the theme settings:

<SkypeSettings>
    <Theming>
        <ThemeName>Custom</ThemeName>
        <CustomThemeImageUrl>teamsroomsbg.jpg</CustomThemeImageUrl>
        <CustomThemeColor>
            <RedComponent>0</RedComponent>
            <GreenComponent>0</GreenComponent>
            <BlueComponent>0</BlueComponent>
        </CustomThemeColor>
    </Theming>
</SkypeSettings>
  • CustomThemeImageUrl is the background image; adjust it to the correct path on your device.
  • CustomThemeColor is the accent colour. Set RedComponent, GreenComponent and BlueComponent to the colour you want.

Image size

The image should be 3840 × 1080 pixels: think of it as two screens of 1920 × 1080. The right half is the main screen; the left half is used by the secondary screen on systems that have one.

Going further

You can automate the rollout with a script that fetches both files from an Azure Blob. Microsoft documents the other options of SkypeSettings.xml in Manage a Microsoft Teams Rooms console settings remotely with an XML configuration file.
